TGS '07: Sega predicts Sonic-Mario crossover will sell 4 million

Publisher has high hopes for its upcoming Olympics game in which the company's blue blur squares off against Nintendo's plucky plummer.

TOKYO--Sega is looking to bring home the gold with the upcoming Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. According to a Bloomberg report, Sega corporate director Masanao Maede said at the Tokyo Game Show that the company will sell 4 million copies of the game, which is set to launch later this year.

Maede didn't give a time frame for how quickly the game would hit that milestone, but both characters reached such lofty sales heights before. The original Sonic the Hedgehog game that frequently was packed in with the Sega Genesis has been touted as selling more than 4 million copies worldwide, while Nintendo has said sales of the DS hit New Super Mario Bros. have topped 9.5 million copies worldwide.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games is set for a November release on the DS and Wii. For more on the game, check out GameSpot's Q&A with Nintendo and Sega executives.

The sheer ignorance of the majority of Gamespotters makes me sad to say the least...

To those who believe there have been no good Sonic games since the mega drive: Do these names ring a bell: Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic and the Secret Rings, Sonic Advance 1,2,3, Sonic Rush, Sonic Rush Adventure? If not, check them here, or at Gamerankings.

To those who say Sega sucks and all games published by them: Medieval? Football Manager?

To those who talk about "serious" gamers: If you consider your average WoW'er or Halo'er a "serious" gamer, you need to look at the 90% rest of the gaming population.

Now everyone who talks **** about this game go back to your "normal" level grinding and leave us who have a life enjoy over this game.

I remember when everyone was damn well convinced this was a total hoax. I still wonder at the balance issues-do Segans speed along while Nintendons pull aces out of their sleeves to cover up a shell toss? Then again, maybe I should read the previews.

Yeah, quit your bellyaching fanboys. Just be glad your gimmick machine is getting another party game.( I'm glad I didn't jump on the wii bandwagon.)

Sounds dumb, but will sell reguardless. Oh and Mario Galaxy doesn't come out until next year, I thought all fanboys knew that.

This is one olympics game that is guaranteed to be "special". I just hope that Sega and Nintendo don't embarass themselves too much.

P.S. A running contest? WTF? Everyone knows that Sonic will always outrun Mario but Mario can outjump Sonic.

Mario Party 8 outsold Super Paper Mario, so it is possible this could outdo Mario Galaxy. The latter will be the better game regardless.

Well it is released on November 16th same as another Mario game. Super Mario Galaxy which should outsell Mario and Sonic.

Jacornonthecob - Problem with that logic is that Wii Play comes with a Wii Remote, making it in effect a $10 game (the Wii Remote on its own is $40). Would Wii Play sell anywhere near as much without that remote? Something to think about.

To the people complaining about how Mario shouldn't beat Sonic in a race; what about the rest of the game. With this logic Mario and Sonic BOTH wouldn't win in the hammer throw against Bowser or lets say Donkey Kong!! So therefore, this game is an abomination!!!

BTW I'm just kidding people need to calm down and remember it's just a dumb Track & Field videogame with Sega and Nintendo characters.

As much as I am sick of these kinds of games, it probably will sell that much. After all, think of how much Wii Play sold. All the people who buy games like Wii Play will buy this, as will Mario and Sonic fanboys.
Also, the game spreads across two platforms, so some people may buy both versions if they really wanted to.

But I think the only place where two video game series should combine is in a RPG or Super Smash Bros.

The games sell well but come on, if you look at the sales games like Halo3 and GTA are beating Mario and sonic on consoles. I don't think this game will sell 4 million, even with all the fanboys its not gonna sell that much.

Of course this game will sell that much. Nintendo could put out a noninteractive disc of Mario giggling and the fanboys would sell millions. And of course, Sega's fanboys have completely ignored the fact that Sonic has sucked for over 10 years. It'll sell due to the combined idiocy of two fanboy camps, not on the game's merits.

I hear a lot of people complaining about how Mario will never out run Sonic. Has anyone put the two chrs to the test? I remember as a Kid playing through Super Mario bros. 1 with out ever dieing and with out ever letting go of the B button. I think this game might have a lot to offer.

This game doesn't seem to appeal to me at all. I am a huge fan of Mario and Sonic but how can Mario outrun Sonic.

Looks like a boring game because Sonic can not swim and Eggman is not fast neither is Bowser. This is looking like a dissapointing title. The reason it will sell is because it's Sonic and Mario together in a game. Smash Bros Brawl would be so much better.

SEGA have made horrible games lately but to have Mario in one might hurt Nintendos sales with Mario games because to me he is a much more popular character than Sonic. At least there's one great Mario game coming out and thats Super Mario Galaxy.

The probelm with this game isn't mario and sonic it's olympic games! it's a nonsense idea to make an olypic games video game. If it was a mario 64 or say sonic the secret ring with cooperitive multiplayer as sonic and mario it would sell 8 millon

Nice simple mario game...actually put some effort in Nintendo...my Wii is not getting any use at all.
As for Sonic : (...i have not seen a worthwhile sonic game since the megadrive...nuff said!

4 mil are you kidding me? First of all Sonic has been trash lately so a lot of gamers probably don't care. I love mario games but I've barely even seen anything on this game. The concept of it isn't that great especially when there's stuff like Halo 3, Mass Effect, Super Mario Galaxy, and Super Smash Brothers Brawl coming out this year. Maybe a million, but 4 mil? I doubt it.

"You guys are underestimating the power of Mario and Sonic in the same game."

Its true, its a excellent idea to bring a game with both mario and sonic in it, but the concept of the game is dumb, boring and stupid. Olympics games?? WTF???? What about an adventure game with 2P coop option??? But this olympics game will be the stupidiest game for wii for sure.

Nick_GE: "How can Mario outrun Sonic? It's like Superman being stronger than The Hulk."

Are you saying that Superman isn't stronger than the Hulk? Because he certainly is.

Don't get me wrong, I like Hulk and he's strong and all, but Superman would kill him.

Really, it's not a very good analogy. They are both strong.

I'll say yes because same people are really looking forward to seeing both Mario and Sonic in the both game.

I'll say no because I have a brain.

Sonic + SSBB = More reasonable approach

You guys are underestimating the power of Mario and Sonic in the same game.

Sonic games have been on the top of charts for years just on the Sonic name alone. What makes any of you think this will sell any less? Especially with Mario..

Yea, I really don't think that this game will sell well, it looks like a bloody awful game. *Re-checks NPDs* Oh wait, almost forgot, crappy Wii games sell regardless of how bad they are. See: Mario Party 8, Wii Play, etc.

Sorry, but this game hast little promise in my eyes. That's just my opinion, I think it'll be a horrible game that'll sell well regardless because the majority of Wii owners have very, very poor taste and games. Stick with MP3, Galaxy, and SSBB.

This game is a marketing ploy to sell millions of games to casual and young gamers, I bet the game will have very little for the serious or mature games player.
