[edit] Old Town Restaurants

Municipal House Pilsen Restaurant

A 'beer cellar' with amazing art-deco architecture. Food is reasonable, service can be a bit slow, beer is good, it is reasonably cheap (Main dishes 190-390kr) and there is live (folkish) music. The Municipal House also has a cafe (cheaper ay to relax with the architecture), an allegedly good French restaurant and a concert hall. The architecture can be viewed for free if you aren't hungry. At the nearest point of Old Town (12-15mins walk through the freeway underpass by Florenc or 1 metro stop - Náměsti Republiky).

Ambiente Ristorante Pasta Fresca

Good Italian house-made pasta, wines, and service

Pravda - Pařížská Street

about 20 min walk from the meeting hotel. International cuisine plus a few Czech specialities. Good English spoken, menu in English, good service. Good quality food although rather expensive - we ended paying 1100 kr per head for two courses, coffee and one bottle of wine shared by four of the five participants at the dinner.

U Provaznice - Provaznicka, just next to Mustek

Cheapish Czech food, English spoken well enough, nonsmoking section not exactly smoke-free but better than some. Solid Czech fare, printed bill, say 400czk per head (more if you want to taste all the oddly-named liquids on the menu).

Le Cafe Colonial - Široká 6 - corner of Široká and Žatecká in Praha 1

International Cuisine with a focus on French. (Caveat - I have not been there yet). Prices are moderate (entrees ~425Kč ~= €15 ~= $20). Menu above. A few friends of mine highly recommend it - they visited about 1 year ago.

Celnice - Right in Náměsti Republiky - A Pilsner Urquell Original Restaurant

Traditional Czech cuisine, plus some international entrees. Quite touristy, though I was surprised to see a number of locals. Pilsner Urquell of course. Beer was good, food was OK. Prices were quite good - We paid ~250Kč (~€9 ~$12) per person total for entree and beer.

Prosezení U Čiriny - Navrátilova 6 - a few streets southwest of Vaslavsce Namestí (Wenceslas Square)

Excellent traditional Czech food in a very nice intimate setting. Many many choices and, again, excellent food. One of us got some wonderful pork tenderloin cutlets surrounded in potato pancake, and the other two (myself included) got the stuffed chicken with chicken liver, onions, and other spices. Goulash soup was excellent, and of course, the beer was good (though only Pilsner Urquell). Party of 3 with appetizer/soup, entree, side dish, desserts and beer was 1050Kč.

Skanza - Across from Hotel Mucha right near Florenc Metro on Sokolovská street.

Pub that is obvious that is a locals hangout. Once you see the sign, you'll go through an open courtyard, around a corner, and down some stairs in the basement of a building. From entrance, if you go one way down the hall, you get to the bar and the non-smoking section, go the other way, and get to the smoking area - in addition to regular tables, there's also some cushy chairs and a coffee table for those that wish to just have a beer. *very relaxed atmosphere* - close enough to the hotel that you can zip over there for lunch and a beer.

[edit] Grocery Store near Subway

The grocery store next to the Florenc metro has a nice selection of basics, as well as an extensive selection of beer, wine and liquor. They have a nice cooler full of sandwiches. The hotel will empty your mini-bar if you ask them (otherwise, I understand from the label, that it scans are you remove?)... Two beers, grapes, vegetables, sandwiches (to share), bread, butter... 300Kc.
