Catholic School Students Sit on City's First Youth Council

MILWAUKEE -- Members of The City of Milwaukee's first Youth Council were sworn in at a City Hall ceremony May 9th that was very similar to the one for members of the Common Council.

However, the 15 new "officials" had to be excused from school in order to attend the event.

The new Youth Council, which was created at the request of Ald. Joe Davis, will advise aldermen on youth issues and will recommend how to spend a portion of federal block grant money currently earmarked for youth programs.

Each aldermanic district is represented by one member of the Youth Council. Members had to be 18 or younger and a high school student in order to be eligible. Currently, the students are serving one-year terms, however, there may be staggered terms in the future, so that the whole body is not replaced at once.

The group's first formal meeting will be at 4:00 p.m. June 8 in the council chamber at City Hall.

Five students, one third of the council, come from Catholic high schools and represent the following districts:

• Keturah Chesser, 4th District, Messmer High School
• Jade Robertson, 9th District, Dominican High School
• Ann Kaiser, 11th District, Pius XI High School
• Nayeli Jane Garcia, 12th District, Dominican
• Maxwell Loos, 14th District, Marquette High School
