Sharing the Ministry of Christ the Teacher – The Parish Christian Formation Committee

In today’s parish the Christian formation committee takes responsibility for developing an overall plan for the ongoing education and formation of its members in faith.

The parish council by-laws state:
The role of the Christian formation committee is to develop within the parish awareness that the parish community has the responsibility for promoting the educational/formation aspect of the mission of the Church. Christian formation is a lifelong process aimed at personal conversion and growth in faith. This committee is advisory to educational administration in the design, implementation and evaluation of the total Christian educational/formation programs in the parish, which include: sacramental preparation, adult and family ministry, youth ministry, school ministry and child ministry.

Parishes organize their committees in different ways, depending on the size and needs of the parish. The Christian formation committee or commission is accountable to the parish council. Whether it is an umbrella committee that bears responsibility for all aspects of Christian formation, or a commission whose particular committees are accountable to the commission, each parish is responsible for continuing the teaching mission of the Church.
