Responding to repeated requests in years past to bring leadership
resources into regions beyond the Milwaukee area, the Archdiocese has
announced that this year's Parish Leadership Conference will be held
in six different locations. The Fall conference, traditionally held
at the Cousins Center and last year melded with other events at the
Midwest Express Center, will be offered in locations in Burlington,
Fond du Lac, Horicon, Kohler, and Waukesha, as well as in Milwaukee.
The conferences will be offered from late September through late October.
Representatives from parishes in various regions of the archdiocese
met with archdiocesan consultants to "custom design" each of the
separate events. Those in Milwaukee requested a full-day session at
the Cousins Center, while others wanted briefer events held on
Saturday morning or, in one case, a weeknight evening. Some of the
events include keynote speakers with workshops while others chose
to go with workshops only. Despite unique features to each event,
all have the common theme of "Being Church in the 21st Century."
According to Mark Peters, one of the consultants involved in the
listening sessions, certain concerns were universal on the part of
parish leaders. "Evangelization was high on everyone's list, as was
responding to the challenge of the priest shortage, getting youth
more involved, and developing volunteers. Others, particularly in
Milwaukee and the southern counties, highlighted the challenges of
becoming a truly multicultural church."
