Hacking the Fox

Abstract Hacking Firefox is easier than you think. We use many of the same technologies to build the browser front-end that web developers use to build their sites, including a markup language to define the user interface, JavaScript to animate it, CSS to style it, and DTD files to localize it.

In this talk, I'm going to walk you through making a change to Firefox, from converting your installation of Firefox to one that's easily hackable, to finding the code you want to change, through to making and testing the change and submitting it back to the project.

I'll also cover where to go for help and how to get plugged into the Mozilla community maelstrom. By the end of the talk, you should know enough to be dangerous!
Pre-requisites You should be familiar with web technologies like HTML/XML, JavaScript, and CSS, and you should be comfortable working on the command line.
Speaker Profile Myk's been hacking ever since he got an Apple IIe in the early 1980s and started reverse engineering its games to add keyboard support. He found the web in the mid 1990s and spent five years building sites and applications for the University of California, Santa Cruz. He's been involved with Mozilla since 2000, when he built a feed reader on the Mozilla platform that was eventually integrated into Thunderbird, and he's been employed to work on Mozilla since 2001, first at AOL/Netscape and then at the Mozilla Foundation and Corporation. Myk is currently working on Firefox, where he's involved with microsummaries, site-specific prefs, and content/protocol handling. He loves to hack.
