Plantation Industries, Pay Off Your Carbon & Social Ecological Debt!
Nusa Dua, Bali- The 13th Conference of Parties of UNFCCC is likely will gave corporations another credit in turning their unsustainable practice into profit by letting notorius forestry companies in Indonesia claim carbon credit from their industrial tree plantations. The trend needs to be exposed and those whose promoting mechanism needs to stopped the outrageous initiatives.
“Plantation industries are always the winner in any situations. They take benefits not only from government promotion and privilege treatments, they go further by making profit in combating their destructive practices,” said Rully Syumanda, Forest Program Manager of WALHI/Friends of the Earth Indonesia.
The companies will be encouraged voluntarily to take part in Reducting Emission from Deforestation and Degradation in Indonesia (REDD-I) which is lounched in Bali this week. The REDDI is assumed to have more meaningful impact if being done in large scale areas and not individual concession¬1 . There are almost 60 million hectare concession grantet to forest-based industry, which 3 million hectares belongs to pulp and paper industries.
This scheme is clearly a climate fround, in light of what have been done by those companies in creating emission from destructive, unsustainable activities which resulted in deforestation. Their bad practices put these corporations as carbon and social ecological deptor to people and the planet.
“Corporation need to pay their carbon and ecological social debt, and not be given privilege to even make profit of people’s live and livelihoods. They need start counting their carbon and social ecological footprint and make measurable effort to reduce emissions” demanded Farah sofa, Deputy Director WALHI.
WALHI strongly appeal to government’s delegation to seek real and genuine solution to addres deforestation issues in the larger term. Government needs to declare a moratorium logging and conversion on higly vulnerable ecological areas, enforce low-and not assist in creating additional profil-to bad corporations and to uphold and respect people’s rights to forestry resources. Environmental tax for those corporations can be a good start in showing their responsibility as carbon deptors.
