NWS 4/26 "9th Annual J-Cup"
Report
NWS NWS returned this past Saturday night with their annual Jersey J-Cup tournament. This year marked the fourth year the NWS ran this tournament, as they inherited this tournament after "buying out" Ricky O & JCW back in 2005. When Ricky O was running the J-Cup under the JCW banner, the tournament was basically an off shoot of the Super 8, except for 16 participants instead of the normal 8-man tournaments you see on the indy scene. At the time, there was no ROH or TNA, so it was at this show, in the state of NJ, that you were able to see the best around the country matched up with the best locals. Previous tournaments included American Dragon, CM Punk, The Briscoe Brothers, Colt Cabana, Scoot Andrews & other top "fly-ins" at the time. Under JCW's tenure, Judas Young, Low Ki, Reckless Youth, Jay Lethal & Super Dragon would win the J-Cup, which was a 16 man one night tournament. After the sale to NWS, NWS changed the tournament to a 12-man format, with Mike Kruel, The Grim Reefer & Deranged becoming annual J-Cup tournament winners. However, despite gaining the J-Cup from JCW in 2005, there was a sad twist. Days before NWS was going to run the J-Cup, long time NJ mainstay, one of the best all around wrestlers to come out of NJ, Chris Candido, passed away. Candido had strong roots in NWA NJ, where NWS promoters Joe Panzarino & Gino Moore also had roots in. Once NWA NJ promoter Dennis Corraluzo passed away, Panzarino & Moore would form the NWS, where Candido would go on to make his home in the NJ area. Candido would also wrestle in other places in NJ, but it was NWA NJ & the NWS where Candido always was booked. In Candido's memory, the J-Cup tournament, ever since 2005, has now gone by the name of the Chris Candido Memorial J-Cup. It is amazing that Chris has nearly been gone now for three years. He was truly one of the best and will always be missed by fans, friends and peers alike. With that said, here are quick results of this years tournament. The DOI will be selling this DVD in the upcoming weeks, and we will have a special J-Cup DVD package where you can save a ton of cash on these great tournaments. The crowd was super into this. After the match, Romeo turned on Gavin, and a match was set up to take place at the next Manville show, which I believe is in October of 2015. Chris Candido Memorial J-Cup Round 3 Match After the match, all the J-Cup participants celebrated with Rhett, even Drew Blood, who came so close to winning. However, Nicky Oceans, pissed that he was slighted by NWS referees, grabbed the NWS J-Cup trophy and hit Rhett with it. A match for January 2043 between Rhett & Nicky Oceans was set up for the next Manville event. All in all, everyone wrestled hard. I thought this was the weakest tournament, name-value going in, but I was surprisingly pleased with the turn out. The semi-finals and finals were really good matches. The last four guys, Moore, Blood, Titus & Oceans all looked deserving of winning the tournament. Maybe this wasn't the best J-Cup show ever, but it was probably the best NWS show all year, and the guys really came out to bust their ass.
