Leaf Printing

Materials needed:
  • Tape
  • Waxed paper 
  • Plastic wrap
  • Leaves
  • Markers, water colors or tempera paint 
  • Materials for clay:  1 cup cornstarch, 1 1-pound box baking soda,  11/2 cups water, and sacuepan.

Note: children will need assistance in making the clay because it involves cooking it over the stove.

Directions for Making Clay:

1.   Using a large saucepan, mix 1 cup cornstarch and 1-1pound box of baking soda while gradually adding the 1 1/2 cups water.

2.  Cook mixture over low heat, stirring occasionally until mixture gets bubbly and thick.  Stir until mixture forms a ball and remove from heat.

3.  Place the ball of mixture onto a sheet of plastic wrap or foil, allowing it to thicken as it cools. 

4.  Bring clay to room temperature before using and tightly wrap any left over clay in plastic wrap and place it in the refrigerator.
 

Directions for making Leaf Print:

1.  Take a handfull of clay into your hand and roll it into a ball.

2.  Place the ball onto a piece of plastic wrap or foil, using tape if necessary for keeping the platic wrap or foil in one place.

3.  Using your hand, flatten out the ball into a circle.

4.  Place your leaf onto the middle of your circle placing the rough side of leaf showing the veins down onto the clay.

                       

        

5.  Using your hand, gently push the leaf onto the clay and then remove the leaf.  Let clay dry overnight.

6. Using markers, water colors, or tempera paint decorate your leaf print.
