Owner and operator of the Wivenhoe, Somerset and North Pine Dams, SEQWater is the major supplier of untreated bulk water to local governments and industries in South East Queensland.

SEQWater is responsible for collecting and storing water to ensure that there is sufficient supply during dry years and maintaining and running storages to minimise any impact on the environment.

SEQWater provides a variety of environmentally appropriate facilities for recreational visitors to enjoy. Provision of recreational services is carefully balanced with a primary commitment to water quality. They are committed to enhancing the experiences of recreational visitors in ways that reflect best-practice land use policies.

Wivenhoe Dam

Wivenhoe Dam was built in 1985 and not only stores water but controls flooding, generates power and provides a valuable natural recreational facility.

Recreation: Lake Wivenhoe provides a tranquil setting for quiet and relaxed land and water based recreation. Some areas are available for exclusive use. Permitted activities include:

  • picnics
  • BBQs
  • camping*
  • fishing*
  • boating (non fuel powered only)*
  • swimming
  • canoeing
  • sailing
  • koala spotting
  • bird watching

*permits are required for these activities

Visiting groups, including schools and social clubs, can attend video sessions and presentations at the Lake Wivenhoe Information Centre from Monday to Friday between 9.00am to 3.00pm. Please contact 07 5427 8100 for booking information.

Somerset Dam

Somerset Dam, which was completed in 1959, is located on the Stanley River, in Esk and Kilcoy Shires at the upstream limit of Wivenhoe Dam storage.

Recreation: Lake Somerset enjoys a regional reputation as being the premier freshwater motorised water sports venue and one of the best freshwater fishing destinations in South East Queensland. Permitted activities include:

  • boating (Powered and non-powered) **
  • BBQs
  • camping
  • fishing*
  • picnics
  • swimming

* Permits are required for these activities

** Please refer to enforceable speed limits which will vary according to water levels during drought. These speed limits may impact recreational activities such as water and jet skiing.
