Known Issues

For more information on RealJukebox issues, please see our online Knowledge Base.

  1. You must have Adaptec's Easy CD Creator (version 4) or CD-R Engine installed with the Adaptec CD-R plug-in

You must have the Adaptec Easy CD Creator (version 4) installed on your system in order to use the CD-R plug-in with the RealJukebox update release. Adaptec will have a free 'engine only' version of Easy CD Creator available for download at http://cdr.adaptec.com/realdeal by the end of January '00.

  2. When attempting to transfer a mono file to CD-R using the Adaptec CD-R plug-in, RealJukebox malfunctions.

RealJukebox does not currently support the transfer of mono files to CD. Please ensure that none of the files you are attempting to transfer are mono files.

  3. When attempting to transfer a file to CD that has been deleted from the RealJukebox database, the burn process aborts or malfunctions.

Tracks that have been deleted from the RealJukebox database cannot be transferred to CD-R. For best results, do not delete tracks during the CD burn process.

  4. Error occurs after cancelling and restarting burn process.

Cancelling the burn process can currently cause undesired results, such as errors and loss of media. For best results, avoid cancelling the burn process in the Update version of RealJukebox.

  5. Unable to download the Rio 500 plug-in:

This plug-in is supported only on Windows 98.

  6. RealJukebox does not function when USB CompactFlash devices are installed on your system:

RealJukebox will not recognize the Flashcard. This includes the RCA Lyra version of RealJukebox.

  7. By design, RealJukebox does not move imported files:
Instead, the location of these files is recorded in the RealJukebox database.

  8. Unable to hear tracks recorded in analog mode:
There are two reasons this problem can occur:

    • With some soundcards, recording silently is not possible. Because the RealJukebox uses your sound card to record in Analog mode, some sound cards require you to play and record at the same time.

    • There is more than one type of volume control in Windows; various volume settings can produce many different results. On a typical system, there are controls for MIDI sound, Wave sound, and CD Audio. Because each system can be configured differently, it is important to calibrate all the volume settings to find the correct recording setting. For more information on this issue, please see our online Knowledge Base.

  9. RealJukebox may default to analog recording even if your CD-ROM drive's manufacturer specifications support digital extraction:
If RealJukebox setup determines that your system will not correctly perform digital extraction, it will automatically select analog recording mode. For more information regarding this issue, please contact Technical Support.

  10. CDInfo is not correct for your CD:
This is very common among classical CDs, where there are just a few tracks per CD. When you are presented with a duplicate CDInfo error message, please choose the data that best fits your CD from the list of potential matches. If no match exists, you can edit your track information manually.

  11. Can't record more than 100,000 tracks:
There is a hard limit of 100,000 tracks in the current version of RealJukebox Gold.

  12. The following CD-ROM drives are known to have problems when performing extraction:
NOTE: Not all users will have problems with these drives. These drives may perform correctly if your system has a fast CPU speed, or updated drivers. In many cases there may be a recording options setting which would work successfully with RealJukebox, such as a lower quality level setting, or turning off play while recording (adjust these settings in RealJukebox Preferences).

    • MITSUMI CD-ROM FX410A !B
    • MITSUMI CD-ROM FX3400S
    • TOSHIBA CD-ROM XM-5702B
    • TOSHIBA CD-ROM 6202B
    • TORiSAN CD-ROM U200
    • NEC 24X CD-ROM CDR-1810A

  13. Some CDs have unusual, nonstandard characteristics, and will be difficult to record:
Most notably, the last track on some CDs will only record in Analog Mode. These types of CDs are:

    • CDs with a lot of short tracks on them
    • CDs with blank tracks
    • Some noncommercial CDs such as: promos and home made CD-Rs
    • Mixed mode CDs (such as games that have audio tracks).
    • Enhanced CDs

  14. System is in 256 colors, launch RealJukebox then change color to 16-bit high color, the product stays in 256 colors:
To update the color display, close and relaunch RealJukebox.

  15. "Broken Link" error message when attempting to download music after upgrading directly from Internet Explorer 2.0 to 5.0:
The Internet Explorer (IE) temp directory gets corrupted after installing 5.0. To fix this, go into IE and move your temp files directory to another location, and then move it back to its original location. (You must restart Windows after both moves.)

  16. Transferring Mono files to a Portable Music Player displays error but completes transfer:
The RealJukebox does not support the transfer of mono files to Portable Music Players or Storage Devices. There have been reports that attempting to transfer mono files results in an error. If this happens, close and restart RealJukebox.

  17. RealJukebox employs an "Ask, Tell, Help" policy with regard to your computer settings.
If RealJukebox notices a setting that can be changed for your benefit, setup will notify you and ask before making any changes to your system. If you choose to associate MP3 files with another application, often all you need to do is install that application. You may or may not be informed which associations that application is making. CDA (CD Audio) is treated similarly. To restore these filetypes and features back to RealJukebox, simply launch the RealJukebox program. You will be asked whether you want RealJukebox to reclaim these filetypes.

  18. RealJukebox has difficulty with certain laptop configurations.

    • RealJukebox may become unresponsive when recording on some Dell Latitude and IBM ThinkPad laptop computers.
When you record at 128 Kbps (or higher) MP3 with RealJukebox on a Dell Latitude or IBM ThinkPad laptop computer, RealJukebox can stop responding. We suggest that you record your MP3s at a recording rate lower than 128 Kbps. Alternatively, contact your manufacturer to see if there are updated drivers available for your sound card.

    • Dell Latitude Laptops can become unresponsive after pausing with RealJukebox.
On some laptop systems, users may experience problems when using the pause function in RealJukebox. When the pause button is left on for more than 20-30 seconds, the system may 'freeze' or 'hang' indefinitely.

NOTE : A permanent freeze or hang state resulting from this behavior has been reported specifically on Dell Latitude's CPiA and CPiR laptop series.

To get out of the prolonged pause state, click on the pause button again to release the pause. Wait for about 30 seconds for this action to register and take place. The system may not be very responsive at this stage, and will require more time to execute the "un-pause."

    • Recording a CD may hang RealJukebox on a Dell Latitude laptop using the Samsung SCR-2438.
During recording with a machine of this configuration, the record progress indicator may slow down and eventually stop. Your machine will need to be restarted if this occurs.

  19. RealJukebox does not support networked drive locations.
You may experience problems with music that is not on your local machine. These problems include playing, recording, and importing music files that exist on shared or mapped network drive locations.

  20. Differences in playback volume.
If you use RealJukebox to play your CD, the volume may be louder than when you use RealJukebox to play music files from your Music Library. This is due to the fact that CD and WAV volume settings are independent in Windows. To correct this problem, double click on the windows volume control in the system tray (next to the clock) and adjust the CD and WAV volume settings.

  21. Slow to begin playback with Shuffle Play and 1200+ tracks.
If you have selected a playlist or a grouping that has 1200 or more tracks in it, and if you have shuffle play selected, you may experience a 10 second delay when playing tracks.

  22. Muting sound with the Windows volume control does not change the volume icon in RealJukebox.
When you use the Windows volume control to mute sound, the speaker icon in RealJukebox does not update (i.e., change to a speaker icon with a red X). When you mute sound directly from within RealJukebox, the icon does update as expected. RealJukebox cannot detect when you use the Windows volume control to mute sound on a system-wide basis and thus does not display the mute icon. (This applies to the RealPlayer as well.)

  23. Recording in RealSlideshow may affect RealJukebox recording levels.
If you use RealSlideshow to record audio, you may not be able to record CDs successfully using RealJukebox in analog mode. To correct this problem, use the recording options in the windows volume control to reset the recording level to your desired level. Also in the recording options, check the "Select" box under CD Audio. For more information on this issue, please see our online Knowledge Base.

  24. Playback stutters during WAV recording
Because recording to WAV format is very CPU intensive, you may experience some stutter during playback when recording and playing a track simultaneously. If your are recording digitally, this should not effect the final recorded track. To address this problem, try turning off all other running applications, and increase RealJukebox CPU usage in Preferences under Advanced Recording Options.

  25. Windows NT Issues
If you are running Windows NT with RealJukebox, there are additional issues that you may encounter:

    • Windows NT and ASPI:
ASPI is one of several methods of extracting music CD data. Some Windows NT systems do not have ASPI drivers, which can cause problems when recording digitally in RealJukebox. If you received this error while recording, you may wish to switch to analog recording mode:

      1. From RealJukebox, open the Options menu and select Preferences.
      2. Click the Recording Options tab.
      3. Choose "Analog" under "Recording Methods," and click OK.

Installing ASPI drivers can sometimes solve this problem. Please contact your CD-ROM manufacturer for more information. See also the General Recommendation below.

    • Other Problems with Recording:
Although you may not receive an error, you may experience the following problems:

      • Tracks fail to record.
      • Tracks record to 99%, then recording aborts.
      • Playback is sluggish when changing tracks or view in RealJukebox.

In general, following the steps above (#1-3) in Windows NT and ASPI will correct these problems.

      General Recommendation:
If you are experiencing any of the above issues, we recommend that you purchase an ASPI driver for your system. As of this writing, these drivers are not available as freeware or shareware. More information can be found at http://www.adaptec.com.

CD-R Burning Tips

To achieve high quality recording in RealJukebox with the Adaptec CD-R plug-in, please do the following:

  • Ensure that you have plenty of available disk space. A CD-R can hold up to 650 MB of information or 74 minutes or recordings. When burning a CD, RealJukebox must store the information to a temporary file on your hard drive before writing data to the CD. The more hard drive space you have available, the less likely it is that your system will halt during the creation process.

  • There are many different types of blank CD-R discs available. Make sure that your media of choice works with Easy CD Creator before using it with RealJukebox. Some media types use different color dyes in the CD that may not compatible with the laser on all drives. Test at least one disc or use a brand that is familiar to you.

  • Do not use your computer while burning CDs. The CD burn process is extremely memory intensive and using other programs may interrupt the process. Even if your machine is capable of playing music or web browsing while your CD-ROM burns, you may find flaws in tracks afterward. These flaws can range from tracks that are too short, muted, or skip within the song.

  • Queue up all the songs you wish to burn before pressing the Transfer button. This will streamline the transfer, resulting in a smoother write process.

  • For best results, disable the AutoPlay/AutoRecord features of RealJukebox. Once a CD is finished burning the Adaptec plugin will eject then reload the CD to let you know the burn was successful. When the AutoPlay/AutoRecord features are enabled, RealJukebox will attempt to record the new CD, and may present an error message.

    To disable these features:

    1. Open the Options menu and select Preferences.
    2. Click the General tab.
    3. Uncheck the boxes labeled "Start Playing The CD," and "Start Recording the CD."
    4. Click OK.
