International groups have created and expanded national parks to protect leopard and bear populations in Tibet. Whale sanctuaries have been established to protect the gray whale and the white whale.
• ENDANGERED ANIMALS: In the U.S., the Endangered Species Act was passed in 1973 and a number of species have been brought back from the edge of extinction, including the American bald eagle, the California condor, and the gray wolf.
