Signs of Need (50
Ways to Save Animals)
-
Every
year in the U.S. over 20,000,000 cats and dogs end up in a shelter.
Of these, over 15,000,000 are euthanized.
- Approximately 10 billion animals are killed each year in
the U.S. for food.
-
The
Animal Welfare Act, meant to provide minimal protection for
animals, excludes rats, mice, and birds in laboratories (95%
of the animals used in research).
-
Every
minute, $19,000 worth of endangered animals or animal parts
is sold on the world's black market.
Signs of Hope
Many
compassionate people and programs around the world are working
to protect animals from neglect, cruelty, and extinction:
-
POPULATION REDUCTION: Animal adoption
programs, no-kill shelters, and low-cost spaying and neutering
programs are all helping to protect companion animals.
-
WILLING ENTERTAINERS:
Audiences are frequenting circuses that feature the amazing
feats of talented people and turning away from the harsh
realities of animal circuses.
-
WILDLIFE SANCTUARIES: The Great
Ape Conservation Act establishes a federal fund for projects
in Africa and Asia that conserve great apes in their natural
habitat. International groups have created and expanded
national parks to protect leopard and bear populations in
Tibet. Whale sanctuaries have been established to protect
the gray whale and the white whale.
-
ENDANGERED ANIMALS: In
the U.S., the Endangered Species Act was passed in 1973
and a number of species have been brought back from the
edge of extinction, including the American bald eagle, the
California condor, and the gray wolf.
