Signs of Need (50
Ways to Save the Earth)
-
Cars,
trucks, and buses spew more than 12 billion pounds of cancer
causing air pollution each year.
-
According
to the National Academy of Science, at least 50 million acres
of rainforest are lost every year.
-
We
have increased levels of carbon dioxide (CO2), the primary global
warming gas, in our atmosphere by 30 percent in the past 100
years.
- Agricultural
runoff has killed millions of fish and is the main reason why
60% of America's rivers and streams are "impaired."
-
At
present rates of extinction, as much as 20 percent of the world's
species could be gone in the next 30 years.
Signs of Hope
-
IT'S A START: While the
Clean Water Act has fundamentally improved the quality of our
nation's waters, polluted runoff from agriculture, sewage treatment
facilities, and urban storm water continue to threaten our nation's
water quality.
-
ENDANGERED SPECIES: Since the Endangered
Species Act was enacted in 1973, we have saved many species
from extinction, including the bald eagle, the lady slipper
orchid, humpback whale, and many other animals and plants. (But
we are still losing species at a rate not seen since the dinosaurs
disappeared 65 million years ago.)
-
CLEAN AIR: Since the Clean
Air Act was passed in 1970, air quality has improved in many
regions of our country.
-
RECYCLING: Since 1990,
Americans have cut in half their garbage that can't be recycled.
You can join other environmentally conscious people around
the world by choosing one of the charities working to protect
our planet.
