Signs
of Need
- According
to a recent survey, 3.6 million Americans are habitual
cocaine users and more than 33 million are regular binge
drinkers.
-
More Americans have died in drunk driving accidents than
in all the wars the US has been involved in since our
nation was founded.
- Tobacco
kills 430,000 Americans every year-that's more than alcohol,
cocaine, heroin, homicide, suicide, car accidents, fire,
and AIDS combined.
Signs
of Hope
Much
is being done to prevent and treat drug abuse:
- DRUG
PREVENTION: Drug prevention programs are starting
influence behavior, especially among children. Drug use
rates among teens have leveled off and have even dropped
slightly among eighth graders.
- DRUNK
DRIVING:
Groups like Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and Students
Against Drunk Driving (SADD) have made drunk driving unpopular.
In 1998-1999 drivers 16-20 who were in fatal drunk driving
crashes dropped 33%. The number of drunk driving deaths
overall has been dropping.
- DRUG
TREATMENT:
Needle-exchange programs, while controversial, have worked
to lower rates of HIV transmission. Drug treatment programs
are working successfully for many addicts to reclaim their
lives.
You
can help prevent and treat drug abuse by choosing a charity
that is working to save people from addiction.
