The Southern Star Observation Wheel is one of the most exciting new tourism projects planned for Melbourne – a stunning addition to the Melbourne landscape that will boast some of the most spectacular views over Melbourne and beyond.

Located at Waterfront City in Melbourne’s Docklands, the Southern Star Observation Wheel features 21 airconditioned and enclosed glass cabins that will showcase views stretching as far as Geelong.

The Southern Star Observation Wheel is only the second of its kind in the world after the hugely successful London Eye.  Whilst the cabins are similar in design, the Southern Star Observation Wheel features a unique state-of-the-art star-like structure whereas the wheel of the London Eye is similar to a bicycle wheel with spokes.

The Southern Star Observation Wheel is expected to open to the public late 2008.

 The structure

  • Constructed using a combination of stainless steel frames, glass and fibre reinforced plastic moulding
  • Will stand over 120 metres (around the height of the Bolte Bridge goal posts)
  • Equal in height to a 38 storey building
  • Unique ‘star’ design and asymmetric legs
  • Features state-of-the-art LED lighting system
  • Designed by Sunoyas Hishino Meisho Corporation, renowned Japanese manufacturer specialising in amusement park rides and wheels

The pods

  • 21 air-conditioned cabins capable of holding up to 20 people each
  • Each cabin measures 5.7 metres in length and 3.7 metres in height
  • Floor to ceiling glass walls maximise 360 degree viewing
  • 20 seats and room to walk around to view Melbourne from various vantage points

The experience

  • Each ride lasts 25-30 minutes
  • Cabins will be available to be hired for private use
  • Located at Waterfront City, visitors will also enjoy having an excellent range of restaurants, entertainment, specialty retailers and Brand Direct outlets in the immediate vicinity

Construction of the second stage is scheduled for completion during 2008.  It follows the launch of the development’s first stage of diverse range of restaurants, boutique commercial suites, public marina and piazza in late 2005.
