Archbishop Timothy M. Dolan’s Statement on Creation of Clergy Sexual Abuse Mediation System

  January 29, 2004

"The new clergy sexual abuse mediation system is evidence of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee’s commitment to dealing openly, compassionately and creatively with victims/survivors of sexual abuse by Catholic clergy members.

"A number of victims have approached us in the past to take advantage of the processes that were in place. However, there were also some who said they were hesitant or reluctant to contact the Church.

"Although no action can undo the harm that victims/survivors have suffered, I believe this system will help resolve disputes between victims/survivors and the Catholic Church in southeastern Wisconsin.

"While this system clearly will function outside the structure of the Catholic Church, I still will be involved with victims/survivors who wish to meet with me. Hearing from victims/survivors is not only important for their recovery from this tragedy, but it is important for me as the leader of the Catholic Church of southeastern Wisconsin.

"I am grateful for Eva Soeka and her hard work that went in to designing a mediation system that will help victims/survivors and the Church continue to recover from this very difficult time in our history."
