Munster Rugby have confirmed that the redeveloped Thomond Park stadium in Limerick will retain its famous name.
The home of the 2006 Heineken Cup champions Munster, where they have lost only on one occasion in European action, is currently under going major redevelopment which will its capacity increase to 26,000 by 2009.
A statement from Munster Rugby on Thursday confirmed that although the possibility of a Naming Rights Partner for the new look venue had been examined, the provincial side have now decided that this concept will not progress any further and the Thomond Park name would remain.
A spokeperson for Munster Rugby said “Having explored the various options, including a detailed assessment of the requirement of the commercial marketplace, the Munster Branch believes that the retention of the name Thomond Park for the ground is the most appropriate route forward.”
Munster Rugby have decided instead to market the naming rights to the new stands on an individual basis.
Munster have used the famous ground as their permanent home for Heineken Cup Pool action since 1998 and recorded an unrivaled unbeaten European home record which lasted until the 20 January 2007 when Leicester Tigers when to Limerick and beat the province 13-6 Heineken Cup.
