Two teams of two unacquainted players competed. One member of each team was "strangely dressed", adorning themselves with various items on their clothing as well as being allowed to make a statue-like pose so as to nonverbally describe to his partner his interests, likes, and preferences. The other player was given 20 seconds to inspect his partner and vocally interpret the clues. When time expired, the first player was released from his pose and allowed to greet the other player.

The player not "strangely" dressed was now charged with going to each of the six "stores" onstage, each store offering four different prizes. Based on the clues worn by his partner, the runner attempted to guess which of the four prizes that player would prefer to have, took it off of the wall and brought it back to the starting point. If the runner chose the correct prize, he threw it into the shopping bag in front of him and proceeded to the next store. If the runner chose the wrong prize, the host read a clue to the right choice and the runner returned to the store to try again. This process continued until the runner successfully retrieved a prize from each of the six stores.

A second team was then brought onstage to repeat the process, in the hopes of completing their shopping spree in a faster time than the first team. The team that finished their spree in the fastest time won the game. The runner won a $500 Service Merchandise gift certificate, while the strangely-dressed player won the prizes he had chosen from each of the stores.

Prior to the bonus round, the winning team was occasionally invited to play an extra game, named "Denise/Dennis du Jour's Double-Up Derby" after the studio audience member who served as the model for each of the stores during that episode. The audience member was introduced to both players, who then attempted to select a prize for the model from one of the six stores. If the team correctly guessed the prize that Denise/Dennis had selected, the audience member wins that prize and the cash prize at stake in the bonus round is doubled. If unsuccessful, Denise/Dennis is still given a $100 "salary". On episodes where the Double-Up Derby was not played, the cash prize in the bonus round was $2000 - the same as if they had won the mini-game.

Bonus Round ("The Birthday Party")

The team was now given the task to wrap and deliver seven gifts for seven different well-known people and fictional characters. On the "Birthday Board" was an array of 12 to 14 different props, one of which was deemed a suitable gift for each of the "guests of honor". One of the guests was revealed to the team, and one of the players would have to select a gift from the board and throw it to his teammate. The other player then placed the item in a gift box and sent it across the table to the guest. If the team sent the right gift, they proceeded to the next guest; otherwise, it was rejected. The team could pass on a guest if so desired, but would have to shop for that same guest later on. If the team could successfully deliver a gift to all seven guests in under 75 seconds, they won a trip and $1000 in cash (doubled to $2000 if the Double-Up Derby was won). Otherwise, they won a $100 gift certificate for each guest they did satisfy.
