COUCH POTATOES

On January 23, 1989, a new game show called Couch Potatoes went into syndication. This show was a more mature version of Remote Control, with two teams os 3 ADULT contestants, and with Marc Summers (of Double Dare fame) as host. The show wasn't nearly as popular as Remote Control, for it went off the air the same year, on September 8, 1989. While the show was very short lived, it eventually became popular by fans of Remote Control at a later age, as well as through the short lived reruns on USA Network in 1990.

The two teams of three players each gave themselves a cute name in regards to a television show, past or present. (A popular name was "Filthy Rich", which was the presuccessor to "Designing Women"). In each round, a team would answer a jump in question. If they answered right, they got 25 points, and they were given a chance to earn more point by answering 3 follow up questions about the first questions answer. However, each member of the team was only allowed to answer one question. A wrong answer gave control to the other team. After four rounds of questions, each team was given a chance in the "catch up" rounds, where a random amount of money was won (using "the randomizer") for each question answered correctly. The point valued ranged from 50 to 200 points, with the ability to immediately "catch up" to their opponents score if they were the team trailing. The winner after this round was over won the game, and $1000.

The bonus round consisted of a game called "Channel Roulette". The team member would pick a VHF channel on TV. (Channels 2-13, of course. If they did UHF channels 14-69, it could have taken a while!) The team had to name what show was in the picture. Each channel had a different point value and had to reach one thousand points in 30 seconds to win $5000. The team players alternated on who chose a channel to answer. However, since this WAS the 80s, another thing that never went away was "Pay TV". If the player chose the channel that was "Pay TV", there score was reset and they had to start over from the beginning. If they didn't reach their five thousand dollar goal, the team recieved a buck for every point they obtained.

Another cool thing about Couch Potatoes is that it had a daily special guest. This guest was usually a television star from the past or present. In fact, there was a week in May where game show personalities like Peter Marshall, Janice Pennington, Bob Eubanks (who also appeared in the first month of Remote Control), and Wink Martindale made appearances on Couch Potatoes.

Well folks, there it is! More will follow on this page in the future. :-)
