With curator Ernest Fenollosa’s 1895 acquisition of ten magnificent Buddhist paintings from the Daitokuji Temple in Japan, the foundation was laid for an outstanding collection of Chinese religious art. Since then, the collection has been expanded to contain significant works of Buddhist bronze, wood, and stone sculpture, Daoist works in bronze and stone, and a broad selection of Buddhist and Daoist paintings.
