Nugget of the Month

On the 4th January 1868, less than 6 months after the discovery of GOLD at Gympie by James NASH, George CURTIS and his nephew Valentine BRIGG, discovered the largest Nugget of GOLD ever found in QLD.

It weighed 975 Troy ounces in the rough, and when smelted contained 906 ozs of pure GOLD.

The claim where it was found was in Sailors Gully, covering ground that had previously been worked.

The nugget was located only a few inches below the surface, and in the following days, after all available ground was pegged in the vicinity, 2 nuggets of 48ozs and 12ozs were found on an adjacent claim.

The Nugget was valued and sold at over 3,000 pounds. It is a sad fact that a legal dispute over part ownership that went to the Full Court, caused most of the proceeds to be wasted on legal costs.
