Debut Album Reviews: Musician (10/96, p.88) - "...Chixdiggit play it fast, mean, and Ramones-brat witty, working the effervescent adolescent shtick....this is easily the finest rock and roll record released so far this year." Melody Maker (6/8/96, p.51) - "Let's rock! Chixdiggit's brilliant Sub Pop debut offers more youthful joie de vivre and rock-god posturing than you can shake your, uh, thang at..." Alternative Press (8/96, p.67) - 4 (out of 5) - "...they seem to have cornered the market on catchy, punk-influenced American rock (think early Goo Goo Dolls)....a gap-toothed grin of an album that rocks hard and quick..." Exclusive Review from CMJ: Chixdiggit could easily be dismissed as Sub Pop's entry into the pop-punk sweepstakes (the seminal Fastbacks aside, of course), but the difference between the Chix' three-chord adrenaline blast and a lot of the others that have recently crossed the CMJ editorial path is that Chixdiggit mixes its familiar, youthful energy with an unmistakable, aging indie-rocker/ cynical hipster quality that their ultra-popular peers lack - and it's just that subtle shade of difference that pushes us firmly behind Chixdiggit. Likely the class clowns of the Canadian rock scene, the band takes aim on this self-titled album not only at silly songwriting conceits - the use of partially parenthetical titles gets a sound beating on "(I Feel Like) (Gerry) Cheevers (Stitch Marks On My Heart)" before the first chord is even struck, and "Angriest Young Men (We're The)" could be a shot at just about any alternative star of the `90s - but fellow Canadian musicians (Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet will probably find "Shadowy Bangers From A Shadowy Duplex" as funny as its authors do), and underground culture sourpusses (who hasn't thought that "Henry Rollins Is No Fun"?). Not only is Chixdiggit brimming with jaded wisecracks, it seems pretty convinced that a minute and 45 seconds is a perfectly acceptable amount of time to rip through these zingers. You've heard Chixdiggit's method before; it's the madness you need to check out. CHERYL BOTCHICK Born on the first of July Reviews These guys are great if you like pop-punk rock. Think Hagfish with much better songs, and the lead singed doesn't get on your nerves. It came as a surprise considering most Fat Wreck Chords/Honest Don's type bands sound like NOFX(what a suprise!). It's your basic three-chord punk, with songs about stupid shit that you just can't turn off. This is definitely one of the best things I've heard come out of the whole Fat Mike/Fat Wreck Chords scene. Go buy this now! Better yet, wait two months and buy it here. fastmusic CHIXDIGGIT! - Born on the First of July (CD, Honest Don's, Power pop/punk) This band is a perfect blend of Cheap Trick and The Shoes, with the intense kick of the Buzzcocks thrown in. There are few bands I've heard do the power pop/punk thing this well. This is right up there with Bracket (a band that is a vastly underrated GAS...). This band plays like a stomping tornado, but it's those breathy, mindblowing vocals that push this completely over the edge. It's funny how so few bands realize how to set yourself apart from everyone: Be direct and simple. Chixdiggit!'s charming hyper pop tunes are as instantly catchy as Teletubbie custard. If you think all hard pop bands sound the same, these guys will prove you wrong. This is The Ramones for the power pop set. Blindingly hummable tunes like"Gettin Air," "My Girl's Retro," "Quit Your Job," "My Restaurant," "Ohio," and "Brunette Summer" are about fifty times better than the best of the best. Do I dig this? Whether or not this band becomes popular is irrelevant. Here in 'les baby la la' they be an instant rockin' HIT. This will certainly be one of our favorites of the year. HOLY MOTHER OF GOD!!! (Rating: 6 out of 6) Babysue.com Chixdiggit are raw energy pure and simple. Their first album was released by Sub Pop in 1996, it was self titled. This is their second effort, "Born on the First of July" proves it. From the moment "Gettin' Air" blows out of your stereo speakers, all the way through to the beyond surreal secret last track, "Nobody" (we'll talk about that in a minute), this band makes it known that to truly experience the band in all its dichotomies, you must see Chixdiggit live. The honest lyrics and multilayered harmonies, though, speak volumes about the band's potential as being radio friendly (however wretched a description that is for music that's highly listenable.) With "My Girl's Retro" (just love the way the lead singer pronounces it, "Re-ter-o"), Rancid is challenged to a battle of knashing punk and with "Sikome Beach", these guys right here have the greatest guitar lick this side of The Offspring. "Chupacabras" is a useful tune if for nothing else than just a guide on how exactly to pronounce the title, with a Steve Miller "Abracadabra"-ish nod when they sing, "Look out Look out!" "Quit Your Job" seems to be an ode to all that is slacker generation X, and then changes direction to warn that no matter what occupation you do end up choosing, starting a band would probably be the worst idea you ever came up with. "My Restaurant" is an endearing little tune written in the perspective of a dishwasher in a Waffle House kind of environment with a Melrose Place staff of employees, that immediately reminded me of "Kim the Waitress". Good time girls are addressed with "Julienne" and "Brunette Summer", while unrequited love and possibly stalking are the main theme of "20 Times" . The next three tracks bring out the punk guitar element of the band, with a nod to the Ramones' style in "Ohio", and a Speedo "Stuck in The Middle" vibe on 2000 Flushes. Then, just when you think your hosts who have taken on a fabulous surf-music/punk/ska vibe ride are through with the tour, Chixdiggit bring a completely unexpected and obscure cover to the last untitled track with early eighties country's one hit wonder Sylvia's song, "Nobody". What can be said about a band who's cool enough to know how to rock hard and fast, and still goofy enough to pay homage to Sylvia? I for one am impressed. All in all, the guitar parts are fast and simple but effective, the drummer blatantly kicks ass, and Chixdiggit proves the theory that less is definitely more. Amen. --Sarahbeth Purcell Chixdiggit! Born On The First Of July [Honest Don's] Rating: 8.1 In the church of Ramone, Green Day are merely slick televangelists; Chixdiggit, on the other hand, are high priests dispensing communion in the form of Born on the First of July's thirteen crunchy punk- pop wafers. These four Canadian lads preach the gospel the way Joey, Johnny, Dee Dee and Marky would have wanted it: fast, loud, over in less than three minutes, and served up with a goofy grin. Chixdiggit clearly has little patience for things like third verses, bridges, and repeated choruses, since Born on the First of July doesn't even break the 30- minute mark; still, all the better to listen to it twice before the hour's up. With a wall- of- Marshall- stacks guitar sound that could only have been created by amps stolen from Weezer's rehearsal space while Rivers Cuomo was busy moping around in his bedroom, tracks like "Julianne" and "Ohio" are as sticky, buzzy and sweet as an espresso lollipop. You might find yourself questioning the artistic merit of the 25- second- long "Quit Your Job," or wonder if "Brunette Summer" strays a little too close to hair- metal- ballad territory, but you'll probably be too busy pogoing the night away to notice. Can you dig it? Skrutt (swedish web zine) review of From Scene to shining Scene This is one of the best bands I have heard in a long time in the poppunkgenre and I have heard some bands, you know. Itīs difficult to compare to something but band like Green Day is near but Undertones which is the best poppunkbands ever have a finger in this. Chixdiggit isnīt so far from the big stars either and they can be big with the right promotion. The name sits like a hat and the music too. Itīs not often you can hear so clear sound , good melodies and singing that pours foreward.(NINE) 11/8-00 |
