Doctor Ahmed Nazif :

 Doctor Ahmed Nazif is one of Egypt' most brilliant in the field of information technology (IT) and telecommunication. He is well known, especially for his achievements in introducing Egypt to state-of-the-art IT.
 
Dr. Nazif was born in Alexandria on July 8, 1952. He is married with two children.
 
Nazif graduated from the Communications and Electronics Department, Faculty of Engineering, Cairo University, in 1973. He obtained his MA in 1976 and travelled to Canada for his PhD in Computer Engineering (McGill University, in 1983). When he returned, Nazif worked as a teacher in the Faculty of Engineering, Cairo University, where he became professor in 1994.
 
In 1989, Nazif worked as Executive Director of the Cabinet's Information Center. Meanwhile, he supervised implementation of several IT projects in different ministries and governorates. He also was in charge of Egypt's computerized ID code project.
 
In October 1999, Nazif took the first portfolio of Communications and Information Technology in Egypt. He developed the country's 1999/2000 national communications and information plan, which translated in 2003 into the Initiative of the Egyptian Information Society; an initiative that was announced by President Hosni Mubarak in the Geneva-hosted World Summit on Information Society (WSIS), December 2003.
 
While he served as minister, Nazif worked to develop Egypt's IT and communication infrastructure and to build a strong Egyptian information society. His endeavours have borne fruit:
 
 - Telephone lines extended to cover almost all parts of Egypt.

-  Mobile-phone subscribers rose from 600,000 in 1999 to 6.5 million in 2004

 - Internet users rose from 400,000 in 1999 to 3.5 million in June 2004.

 - Rural phone portals increased from 755 in 1999 to 1,092.

 - IT companies multiplied to 1,219 in 2004 compared to 266 in 1999.

- IT clubs tripled from 30 in 1999 to some 1,000 in 2004.

 - The Free Internet Service Initiative.

 - The Home Computer Initiative.

 - The High-Speed Internet Initiative.

-  The Smart Village Project.

-  The laws on Communications, e-signature, and others.

 - The Agreements signed with leading world communications and IT.

-  The Human Resources Development and Graduates Training Program.

-  The restructuring of the communications sector and the opening of the local market to foreign investments.

 - The establishment of the Nile Technological Universityin the 6th October City, in cooperation with the private. Sector and major international education institutions.

 -  The International Telecommunication Union's (ITU) Telecom Africa 2004.
