2005 Global Marijuana March

Report from Ukiah

A small but goodly number of folks arrived early, some with signs, assembling on the steps and showing their support for cannabis. Things picked up @ 1:30 however when someone showed up with a bunch of banners and posters. The number of people carrying posters swelled to about 20,with passerby and loads of friends joining in the festivities, all aimed at the packed traffic in front (the courthouse is smack dab in the downtown, and the traffic was packed. I estimated more than 2 thousand cars passed by while the rally was on, and the response was nearly 90% in support of what was on the posters and banners, mentioning the prison sentences meted out for pot, as well as the utilitarian, medicinal and recreational properties and uses (my favorite was "Clo" the cow smoking a pipe, saying"got pot?", but there was a good variety that day).

There was a genuine party assembled, and everyone seemed to respond, fueling the event 'til 4:30, when the banners came down and everyone went home. A good time was had by all, with nearly everyone expressing their distaste with the emergency ordinance which the Ukiah city council put in, which basically negates Prop. 215 by zoning regulations and rules. Very ominous, especially coming out of Ukiah, where the majority of the voters passed measure G a few years ago, which accepts recreational use as well as medicinal.
