2005 Global Marijuana March

Report from Tampere

In Finland there were demonstrations in 5 cities. In Helsinki there were 400 people, in Turku 200, in Tampere and Oulu 100 and in Jyväskylä tens of people. In Tampere there was also an after party through the whole night where people went from other towns, too.

National broadcasting company, YLE, sent a good piece of news from Helsinki in the prime time news at 20.30. YLE showed a demo in Helsinki, the chair man of local cannabis association told his view and a couple of demonstrators told theirs. Then the chief of health ministry told that there's no urgent need to change law. Good and neutral piece of news.

Local prohibition organisation IHRY had organized a national campaign against cannabis and a counter demo in Turku that reminded us about the former Soviet Union. During the 70' Finland had to bow strongly towards USSR and thus newspapers had to write very carefully about foreign politics. Now almost all the newspapers printed the same piece of news with official knowledge brought from the prohibitionistic Sweden.
