Introduction to Freewheeling

Best way to understand Freewheeling?? See and hear it in action.

Philosophy

Freewheeling is
a new way 'to be'
In The Muse-ical Moment.
It's a live looping instrument
that returns us to the joy
of making music 'spontaneously'.

Freewheeling allows us to build repetitive grooves by sampling and directing loops from within spirited improvisation.

It works because, down to the core, it's built around improv. We leave mice and menus, and dive into our own process of making sound.

The principle author of Freewheeling is JP Mercury. Freewheeling was also originally a Max/MSP external.

Technical Features

Freewheeling runs under Mac OS X and Linux, and is open source software, released under the GNU GPL license.

The ChangeLog is a good resource, because all major new features have been documented there.

Getting Started

Press tab to cycle between the QWERTY and MIDI keyboard loop displays.

Press and hold a letter key such as Q key to start recording a loop on that key. Tap the key again to end the loop. The lowest octave of a 61 key keyboard is also used for controlling loops.

Taping the key will toggle the loop and off. F1 will use that loop as a pulse for further loop captures. Tap F2 to set a pulse.

All the letter keys record loops except: t u z x v b.

Ins / Del control all the input levels.

Home / End control the output levels.

By default Freewheeling will start in laptop mode (this can be changed by setting VAR_laptopkeymode, see Configuring below). Press '/ for help.

Configuring Freewheeling

The first time you run Freewheeling a ~/.fweelin/.fweelin.rc file will be created (on Linux at least). This can then be edited to add soundfonts and the like.

New .xml Configuration System:

Configuring Freewheeling is much easier with the new .xml files introduced in v0.5.6. Click the link above to find out more.
