Guidelines on the use of  Hand-Phone in Schools

Guiding Principle

The use of hand-phones in school should not cause distractions to learning.

Objectives

  1. Pupils learn how to manage technology and lifestyle needs.

  2. Pupils learn to take responsibility for their own actions.

Rules

  1. The hand-phone is to be switched off during lesson time that includes enrichment lessons, remedial lessons, tests/ CCA etc. It must remain unseen e.g. it cannot be placed openly under the desk or in an open bag.

  2. It can be used anywhere before 0720h, during recess, after dismissal/ after remedial etc. The time between periods is considered “ lesson time” and therefore the hand-phone cannot be switched on or used.

  3. The definition of ‘use’ is when the hand-phone is switched on.

  4. When the hand-phone is used in the correct manner, it is the responsibility of the user to ensure that he/ she is not obtrusive, disruptive, inconsiderate and distracting. Therefore there shall be no loud talking and flaunting of the hand-phone. Usage must be discreet and considerate. The breaking of this rule will also lead to confiscation.

  5. If the hand- phone is not claimed within 3 months from the due date for claiming, the school has the right to dispose of it as it sees fit.

Consequence for breaking rules on use of hand-phone.

  1. The confiscated hand-phone will be retained by the school for not less than 2 weeks and not more than 3 months. The pupil’s parent/ guardian is expected to come to school to collect the confiscated hand-phone.

  2. Both the sender/receiver of messages and caller and receiver will be punished.

In case of emergency

Parents

  1. Parents/ guardian have been informed to call the General Office at 6344 1393 and so there is no need for a pupil to switch on the hand-phone periodically to retrieve / monitor calls/ messages from parents or guardian.

  2. Parents/ guardian can message his/ her child if there is any need to arrange personal schedules e.g. fetching his child home; change of tuition time etc. and the child can retrieve the messages at an appropriate time.

Pupils

  1. Should a pupil wish to communicate with his parents/ guardian with regard to some urgent matters, he can report to the General Office and make the call.
