Kojima Productions' Metal Gear Solid 4 was the biggest-selling PS3 game of 2008 in Japan, according to data provided by publisher Enterbrain.

Konami's long-awaited Metal Gear title had amassed sales of 686,254 last year; 476,334 in its first week alone. The game is cited as the PS3's top seller as part of a wider list of the 100 top-selling games of last year.

When measured against all releases across the region, Metal Gear Solid 4 ranks in at eleventh. Ahead of it are nine games for Nintendo consoles, with the non-bundled Wii Sports sitting in tenth, Animal Crossing City Folk in eighth, Dairantou Smash Brothers X in fifth, and Mario Kart Wii in fourth.

The best selling game in Japan last year was, however, not a Nintendo title, as Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G moved as many as 2,452,111 copies last year to outsell its peers. The DS title Pokemon Platinum wasn't far behind in second place, after selling 2,187,337 units during the year.

Nintendo's Wii Fit, despite being released in 2007, sold an extra 2,149,131 copies last year. The retail performance takes its total sales (before 2009) to just under three million.

The entire top 100 list was published across two weekly editions of Famitsu and cited on game site ps3hyper.com as well as Kotaku.

Elsewhere in the list, shown below, is Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto IV, the DS version of Chrono Trigger, Devil May Cry 4, Pro Evo 2009, and a host of other key thirdparty titles.
