Second life celebrates its 3rd Anniversary

secondlife
Just three short summers ago, Second Life was officially launched. We are planning an in-world celebration of our three-year anniversary - on June 23rd - that is not to be missed. We've got a few surprises up our sleeves. Keep your eyes on the Announcement Forums for more information. Thank you all for making Second Life such an amazing place!

Fellowship Award Winners Announced

The first Linden Lab Fellowship for creative innovation in visual and performing arts has been awarded to a pair of students from the
Art Institute of Chicago. This US$4000 fellowship will allow Simon Spartalian (a.k.a. Simon Jezebel in Second Life) and Mike Beradino to continue their work on a way to create physical versions of Second Life objects in full 3D, using various materials. So far they have created objects up to 9"X 5"X 5" out of anything from foam to wax to stainless steel. To learn more, visit their blog:

Party Tonight...and Every Night!
TG Party

It should be no surprise that Teen Residents are as ready as their elders to unwind from a long day; perhaps even more ready. After all, isn't it the old people who are always saying things like "What is that noise you're listening to?", "Turn it down!", or "I think I've broken my hip!"?

Greeting New Arrivals with Care
Seronis

Meet Seronis Zagato, a Second Life Instructor and Mentor who has helped develop a landmark randomization script to distribute new departures between Ahern and Waterhead Welcome Areas from Help Island. She has also been spotted helping Torley clean up trash on Help Island and setting objects to the Mentor group. You can meet Seronis at her class where she teaches LSL
(scripting) at NCI every Tuesday at 5 PM SLT.

Mera PixelSara Bachman is a helper in the "Yadni Newbies Help Group" and a Second Life Instructor. New Resident Ute Hicks referred Sara to us. Ute said, "I want to commend her and all the other angelic SL Residents. They make my experience in SL truly remarkable." Sara introduces new Residents to her Second Life home Harmony Beach Marina, where they can ride motorboats and relax.

Virtual Record Release Party
developer

Last week, Sire Records and musician Regina Spektor launched an interactive, virtual listening party for her new album, Begin to Hope, inside Second Life. Songs from the album will be available at six different 'listening posts' in a virtual New York City loft in-world. This is the fourth album for Spektor who is known for her provocative vocal style, prodigious piano skills, and idiosyncratic songwriting. The experience was created by Millions of Us, Inc, which is headed up by Reuben Steiger, former Second Life evangelist for Linden Lab, and built by Residents Aimee Weber and Green Fate. This is the first time a major record company has launched an album in Second Life. Two listening stations have already opened in-world. Visit Kasba or Chima to get a sneak peek. The album itself won't be released until June 14th.

Dealing with Harassment in Second Life

With the exception of Assault, Harassment is the single most common Community Standard violation in Second Life. It is the third most common reason people are removed from Second Life permanently. Harassment in-world is as diverse as Second Life itself; impeding movement through the use of primitives, continuous instant messaging and other unwanted contact, sexual harassment, verbal abuse and the solicitation of abuse are common offenses found in Second Life.
Have you been harassed? Find out.

Tips and Tricks

Better Building with Primfficiency!

As you may already know, "prims" are the basic building blocks used to create all objects in Second Life. Combining prims and shaping them allows you to come up with some complex contraptions and interesting visual wonders. Find out how.

As We See It

Open Channels

It was a big day recently when we crossed the 200,000 mark for active Second Life accounts. And along with the excitement over hitting such a milestone came the realization that we've grown from the size of a small town to that of a large city. The nature of our community has changed and we are making changes to adapt to this growth. Learn more.

Agree? Disagree? Let us know - send us your Letter to the Editor - with your Second Life username - and we will publish a representative set in the next edition of The Second Opinion.
Your Letters

We received many responses to our opinion piece: The Evolution of a Self-Sustaining Economy. A representative sample of the letters start here but you'll need to click through to read the whole text and we encourage you to do just that. Thank you for your responses.

Don't Stop the Allowances
I have read some of the ideas for the self-sustaining economy and am not sure that you are aware that some of them are being used now.(keep reading) from Sage Sullivan

Real World Models Are More Complex
See this is the problem with basing this on a real-world economy. Second Life isn't the real world, things are legal here that are illegal elsewhere.(keep reading) from Dallas Harmison

No Subsidies Will Make the Game Unplayable
Doing away with the traffic awards and other subsidies, will not only ruin SL but also make the game totally unplayable as a new/free member.(keep reading) from Erik Heart

Selling Lindens Hurts Economy
Everyone is so worried about the "bonus" that is paid to us for having visitors (earning it by attracting) BUT no one cares that SELLING LINDEN kills the economy.(keep reading) from Anjilla Alexander

Stipends Encourage Development
I maintain a residence on 1536m. I leave it open to public traffic because it generates a few L$ due to the "toys" and the environment.(keep reading) from Terry Lewis

Attention Philip: Where's Our FDIC?
I'd like to address this comment to the head honcho himself, Phillip Linden. After hearing a recording of the first on-air town hall meeting, I started thinking.(keep reading) from Shawn Barrett
