Union Civil War Prisoners Of War

originally buried at the

Charleston Race Course - "Potter's Field" Cemetery

South Carolina

and later reinterred at the

Beaufort National Cemetery

A total of 257 Union soldiers were buried in Potter's Field Cemetery, Charleston, SC. Most, if not all, of these died at the Charleston Race Course. Of those, at least 154 bodies were reburied in Beaufort. Private John Gallagher, Co. K, 101st PA is the only marked grave at Beaufort who died at the race course. All of the rest are buried as unknowns.

All of the following names appear on a marble tablet (see photo below) in the Beaufort National Cemetery; located in Section 64. The tablet, as well as a tall granite obelisk, were erected by Mrs. L. T.  "Eliza" Potter who lived in Charleston and cared for the wounded & sick throughout the war. For further info on Mrs. Potter, please see the link below. The tablet states that along with these identified soldiers there were hundreds of others buried from Charleston in the cemetery as well. If you have information relating to any of the following soldiers or any Union soldier who died in Charleston, please contact Edward Boots.
