A screw, like a wedge, is another form of an inclined plane. A screw is an inclined plane wrapped around a cylinder to form a spiral.

Imagine a long staircase (the string) going up to the top of a building (the pole). The end of the stairs (string) would be quite a distance away from the base of the building. If you wrap the stairs (the string) around the pole it would be much closer to the base of the building and therefor more efficient at using space.
