The Society of Publication Designers has released their list of ten best altweekly covers of 2010, and my recent City Pages cover made the cut! For four years now City Pages has produced an annual "Comix Issue" where they invite local cartoonists to submit comic strips based on a theme. 2010's theme was "Declaration of Independents," a nod to MIX [Minneapolis Indie Xpo], a brand new comic and zine convention held at the Soap Factory this summer. Anyway, art director Nick Vlcek asked me to draw the cover based on the "Independents" theme, and the result is to your left. This is the third year in a row that the annual Comix Issue has garnered national media attention. My 2008 "Xcape from Xcel" cartoon won a first place Page One Award, and the entire 2009 Comix Issue won a third place "special section" AltWeekly Award. So kudos to City Pages for allowing us cartoonists to commandeer their magazine once a year!

I have a children's book coming out in two weeks! Created by Andrew Sherburne and Tommy Haines, and written by Andrew, this is a cute story about a brother and sister who can't wait to play a pick-up game of hockey on the pond out back. This is Andrew and Tommy's first children's book as well, but they're already well known to the national hockey scene as the directors & producers of two hockey documentaries, Pond Hockey and Forgotten Miracle. This book is a new direction for all of us, but we had a ton of fun producing it and can't wait to see it in print. Check out the appearances section below to come get a book signed! We'll be giving away free cut-out dolls of Ben & Lucy (and their dog, Rocket), as well as stickers that you can put on your puck!

Graphic Novel Reporter has included Far Arden in its list of "core 25" graphic novels. The list is intended to help individuals who are building their personal or institutional libraries, and it's a huge honor to be among some truly fantastic titles! Also, Vietnam: A Graphic History -- a book that I lettered and helped design -- is included in GNR's "core 100" list.

Far Arden has been nominated for a 2010 Eisner Award. The Eisners are the most prestigious awards in the comics industry and are awarded every summer during the San Diego Comic-Con. Far Arden is nominated in the category "Best Publication for Teens."

Winter 2011
The Upper Midwest
Andrew Sherburne and I are planning to take a little Midwest road trip this winter to promote Ben and Lucy Play Pond Hockey. Stops will likely include Chicago, Madison, and a few cities in Iowa. While I'll do my best to update this list, check with www.benandlucyplaypondhockey.com for the most up-to-date info!
