For the past dozen years I have been running a website of old NZ songs, Pakeha ones at first, but as a result of email requests, most of the common ones in Te Reo too. I've just had an email from a lady in England. Her father, who is now dead, was from NZ, and he taught them to sing this on birthdays, which they still do.
Here is her transcription. Can anyone give the words accurately please?
Tingata tongata pa awa tu Tingata tongata pa awa tu Tingata tongata pa awa tu Ki oke oke my
Ki oke oke my Ki oke oke my
Tingata tongata pa awa tu Tingata tongata pa awa tu Tingata tongata pa awa tu Ki oke oke my
To me it looks like a variation of "He tangata pai rawa ia (x3) Ka hokihoki mai! For he's a jolly good fellow!
