Enchanting Basics

Enchanters use their magical formulae to grant permanent augmentations to weapons, armor and other equipment. Enchanting requires the use of special ingredients that can only be gathered by disenchanting magical items. Using these ingredients, enchanters can make items more powerful.

Enchanting is a higher-level Profession, thus requiring more work than most Professions. The enchanter does not generate items directly from the skill, but instead makes existing items better.

To attain higher levels of enchanting, enchanters often must repeatedly cast enchantments on their friends' equipment, sell enchantments to other players, or offer free enchantments.

Another challenge for enchanters is gathering magic items to disenchant in order to gather the required enchanting reagents. Enchanting for a guild is typically the easiest since guild members send you items to disenchant. Another option is spending money to buy materials, buying trade skill items to disenchant, or using a high level character to try to find magic items to disenchant.

Additionally, enchanters must also work with other Profession masters to create a few other reagents required for enchanting.

Enchanter Levels
There are four levels of enchanting: Apprentice, Journeyman, Expert and Artisan. You will need to work your way up the ladder to gain access to more powerful enchantments.

Becoming an Enchanter

The "enchanting trainer" will start the player out with beginning-level enchanting. Ask a guard for directions to a trainer.

To begin enchanting, look for the enchanting icon in the abilities book (hit "p").

Enchantments also sometimes require specific components that can be purchased from trade merchants. Enchanters will also need a runed copper rod, and later a runed silver rod to perform certain enchantments. They will need to get this basic rod from a blacksmith (or buy it) and then enchant the rod themselves. Higher level enchants require more advanced/powerful rods.

Disenchanting

Disenchant - "Extracts the magical elementals from good quality (Green) or better weapons or armor. Destroys the weapon or armor in the process." After you disenchant an item, you'll receive a loot box and you can pick up the items you have created by disenchanting. You receive the Disenchant ability when you acquire enchanting. The reagent you get from disenchanting an item depends on the item type and level:

Armor - Usually dust (Sometimes essence and if you are very lucky, a shard)
Weapons - Usually essence (Sometimes dust and if you are very lucky, a shard)
Blue Items - A shard
Purple Items - Nexus Crystal, Void Crystal

Epic items that are level 51 and above will disenchant into a Nexus Crystal. Also items that normally disenchant into Large Brilliant Shards have a very small chance of disenchanting into a Nexus Crystal. Powerful enchanting recipes that require these Crystals can be found in the Ahn'Qiraj content.

Epic (Purple) level 61-70 items will disenchant into Void Crystals. Rare (Blue) items that are level 61-70 also have a small chance of disenchanting into a Void Crystal.

Skill Level Limits on Disenchanting
Skill level determines what items you can disenchant:

Skill Level Item Level

Dream Dust 41-50
Illusion Dust 51-60
Arcane Dust 61-70

Essences:
Essences are usually found from disenchanting uncommon quality weapons but can also be produced from uncommon quality armor. For all types of essences, you can convert three minor essences into a major essence of the same type by right clicking on the essences you wish to convert. Likewise, right-clicking on a major essence will turn it into three minor essences.

Essence Item Level
Lesser Magic Essence 1-10
Greater Magic Essence 11-15
Lesser Astral Essence 16-20
Greater Astral Essence 21-25

Lesser Planar Essence1 61-70
Greater Planar Essence1 61-70

1 - You can turn three lesser planar essences into a greater one, and vice versa, by right clicking the essences you wish to convert.

Shards:
Shards come from blue items but also have a small chance of coming from green items.

Shard Item Level
Small Glimmering Shard 1-20
Large Glimmering Shard 21-25
Small Glowing Shard 26-30
Large Glowing Shard 31-35
Small Radiant Shard 36-40
Large Radiant Shard 41-45
Small Brilliant Shard 46-50
Large Brilliant Shard 51-60
Small Prismatic Shard1 61-70
Large Prismatic Shard 61-70

1 - 3 Small Prismatic Shards can be converted into 1 Large Prismatic Shard.

Your enchanting recipes then require various ingredients, with the really powerful ones requiring a shard as one of the reagents. Make sure you don't disenchant an item that you wish to keep.

Finding items to Disenchant:
  • Ask your friends or guildmates to send you old items they don't want so that you can disenchant them.
  • Buy disenchantable items from other players. Some players try to sell them for this purpose.
  • Disenchant soulbound quest items rather than selling them.
  • Enchanting

Select the proper enchantment in the enchanting window, and press the enchant icon on your action bar (or the corresponding hotkey). Then, click on the item you wish to enchant. This can be performed upon items equipped by your character or in your inventory.

A method of enchanting items for other players is to use the non-trade slot in the trade screen window. Instruct the other player to place the item they wish to have them enchanted in the trade screen window. Next, the enchanter should perform the enchantment on the item in the trade screen. Place your cursor over the item, and it will indicate that the item has been enchanted and that it will not be traded. You both then press the trade button, the player will receive the item back, and the enchantment will be complete. You can only enchant one item at a time in the trade screen window. Players should not give you their items to have enchanted. It should only be done via the trade screen window, without actually trading the items.

    Enchanting Supplies
Some required ingredients can be purchased from the enchanting supplier. They sell things such as copper rods, simple wood, star wood, and may also have a few rare supply items.

    Random Tips

    • Enchanters can enchant their own rings with special bonuses. Only the enchanter can receive the benefit of those enchants.
    • You can continue to re-enchant the same item to skill-up, but the item can only have one enchantment at a time.
    • As an enchanter, ask your guildmates and friends to send you items that they don't need so they can be disenchanted.
    • Enchanters can only enchant weapons, gloves, boots, bracers, cloaks, shields, and chest pieces.
    • You can enchant anywhere; you don't need a special place to use your profession like Blacksmiths do.
    • You can find additional enchanting recipes, called formulae, from hidden trainers or as drops from monsters. You can also get them by gaining reputation with different factions.
    • Look for formulae you don't know yet at the auction house.
    • If you try to cast another enchantment on top of an existing enchantment, it will prompt you with a message asking if you want to overwrite the older enchantment.
    • Leatherworkers' armor patches do not stack with enchants. You must decide which is more important to have.
    • If you close the disenchanting loot pane without looting the item, the dust, essence or shard is automatically looted for you.
    • Enchanters can turn some of their dusts and shards into magical oils. These oils when applied to weapons add a temporary bonus to magical damage or mana regeneration that stacks with permanent enchantments. The lower levels of these recipes are found on normal enchanting vendors. The higher level versions are found on special vendors in the world.
    • Weapon enchantment colors: Some people like to get a particular color enchantment on their weapons. Learn the colors of each weapon enchantment and market it accordingly.
