Florida’s economy is being tested in ways we haven’t seen in decades, and during these challenging times, I am grateful for the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. During three budget years, up to $23.8 billion in federal stimulus dollars will be pumped into Florida’s economy. These dollars will help our state avoid deep cuts and prevent tax increases that would further burden Florida’s families and businesses.

In addition to much needed tax relief, the federal recovery package will provide immediate assistance in education, transportation, unemployment compensation, renewable energy and other aid. My administration looks forward to working with the Florida Legislature and cities and counties throughout the state to use these dollars as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Of course, our number-one priority is to direct these dollars toward projects that will create jobs and stimulate Florida’s economy. To that end, I urge the Legislature to quickly take the action necessary to ensure these dollars come to Florida as soon as possible. Our people are depending on it.
