A member of the Bathurst Island group, Alexander Island (at image centre) is the southernmost of 4 large islands — Cameron Island, Île Vanier and Massey Island — that extend northwards along the western coast of Bathurst Island. The island is separated from the mainland by the Pell Strait and from Massey Island by the narrow Boyer Strait.

Alexander Island (484 km²) measures 43 km in length, with a maximum north to south width of 19 km. Average elevations across the island range between 60 m and 180 m above sea level. Like the Bathurst Island mainland and the neighbouring islands, the geology of the island is characterised by east to west trending bands of folded limestone and sandstone bedrock. Deep valleys between the folds have become flooded, creating the narrow channels between the islands to the north and south.
