Democrats (SZDSZ) Budapest Mayor Gábor Demszky on the future of the
city council, in the wake of the Hungarian Socialist Party (MSZP)
caucus recently terminating the coalition, ended abruptly when
opposition representatives left the session after only 45 minutes last
Monday.

Dear Editor,
Thank you for featuring the news in last week’s paper about District
VI’s decision to close all bars and restaurants at 10pm, effective 1
September. How ironic that your front-page story also covered the news
that tourist figures are down compared to a year ago. This district
really is making a greater effort than most to ensure those tourist
figures remain in decline.

Eleonóra Szilágyi Szalai, former HR manger of Budapest
Transport Company (BKV), has already received a severance package but
continues to earn gross monthly wages of HUF 1.2 million (EUR 4,499).
Erzsébet Pásztor Székely, spokeswoman for BKV, said the severance
package was paid to Szalai when her notice period was set to the end of
2008.

waiting for the delayed WizzAir flight to Madrid. My fellow passengers
have long since lost their appeal: Spaniards heading home for the
weekend; American backpackers clocking up another European capital as
they ‘do’ Europe; and Hungarians taking off on a city break.

Wizz Air held a press conference in Budapest last Thursday to hold
forth on its recent successes: an expected increase in passenger
numbers to 7.5 million this year, up 30 per cent on 2008, and the
recent signing of a letter of intent to purchase 50 Airbus A320s.
However, the occasion was overshadowed by farce when a promotional
stunt backfired.

Hungarian youth are divided over whether today's
political system is better than the late Kadar era known as "Goulash
Communism". Just over half of respondents to the Social Policy and
Labour Institute survey judged that the political regime today was
better than under the Kadar era, but 49 percent had the impression that
old regime was better, especially in terms of social security and
employment opportunities.

Budapest City Council announced last Tuesday a plan to
reduce the level of traffic that currently chokes central Budapest
every weekday by creating artificial bottlenecks. For an experimental
period from 4 July until early 2 August, many of the lanes in major
thoroughfares through the city centre would be closed to general
traffic and given over to buses and cyclists, or even used as car
parks, council leaders said.
