National City Bank and MARC'S Discount Stores today announced that they have signed an agreement under which National City will install and operate automatic teller machines in 43 MARC'S stores in Ohio and Connecticut.
The machines, operating on the MONEY ACCESS SERVICE INC. (MAC) automatic teller network, will be installed in MARC'S stores in the first quarter of 1997. Under the terms of the agreement, National City has exclusive rights to install its machines in discount stores owned by MARC's parent, Marc Glassman Inc., as well as in future MARC's stores the company opens. The machines will all be located inside MARC'S stores, providing security and easy access to shoppers who need cash, account balance information or a transfer of funds between accounts.
MARC'S president and chief operating officer Dick Butler said the ATMs give his company another way to provide convenience to customers. "The demand has always been there and we've had a lot of customers asking about ATMs. We researched the market very intensively and we were able to form a good relationship with National City," Mr. Butler said.
For National City, the agreement strengthens the bank's relationship with MARC'S, a long-time corporate customer of the bank, and provides additional banking outlets for National City's retail customers. "MARC'S successful retail stores generate significant traffic, making them ideal locations for ATM machines," said National City Bank vice president Ronald Leslie.
National City affiliates currently operate more than 1,100 ATMs throughout their four-state market of Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana and Pennsylvania, including 208 in the Greater Cleveland area.
