Philosophy of science and mathematics

A central issue in understanding science is understanding the process of scientific discovery. The task of generating explanations of observed phenomena is neither deterministic nor random, but can be effectively studied.

Of course, this is simply part of the overall task of understanding what science is, what the scientific method is, or how sciences reflect changes in beliefs.
