WHAT TO BUY FROM TAIWAN

PREFACE

Taiwan's exports go to almost every corner of the world, and in many cases their quality and reasonable cost give them a commanding position in global markets. The Taiwan information industry, for example, ranked third among all countries in 1995 in terms of total production value, accounting for 57 percent of the monitors and 64 percent of the image scanners sold around the world.

A multitude of other Taiwan-made items also enjoy wide international popularity, including textiles, electronics, machinery, metal products, vehicles, plastic and rubber products, footwear, furniture, chemicals, and processed agricultural products. Just as important, however, are the many other categories of lesser export value that represent the emergence of entirely new industries or product lines. Although not yet leaders in absolute dollar terms, they are pointing the way toward the future and helping to highlight the great strides the ROC has been making in encouraging innovation and the upgrading of industry.

In 1995 Taiwan's exports amounted to US$112 billion, representing an increase of 20 percent over the previous year. The manufacturers offer an enormous array of goods, ranging from traditional standbys such as toys and sporting goods to the very latest in advanced plastics processing machinery and telecommunication equipment. Exports of these and other goods and services not only help the island sustain high levels of economic growth, but also ensure that consumers everywhere are able to enjoy quality products at the most competitive prices.
