I started listening to military aircraft comms in the early eighties, when I was serving in the Dutch Air Force at CRC (Control and Reporting Centre) Nieuw Milligen. From that bunker, in those days situated next to the Dutch Military Air Traffic Control Centre, the skies over Europe were watched 24 hours a day. Unknown or unidentified aircraft were intercepted by fighter controllers, working under the air defense callsign Bandbox. Via secure land-lines and radio links, this CRC was connected to many others all over Western Europe.
Over the years my interest in monitoring and listening to these sites has grown. This resulted in many monitoring 'field' trips to CRCs all over Europe, in order to get a better understanding on the way the NATO air defense network operates, and to find the frequencies being used.
The problem however, is that a lot of information on this network is not available to the general public. The frequencies being used are classified and are not listed in aeronautical publications like NOTAMs or FLIPs. Even the exact locations and callsigns of the sites are sometimes difficult to find, as they are still regarded confidential.
For those of you interested in IRC, you can now participate in real-time, live chats about monitoring the airband. We hold weekly meetings on channel #airband, Monday evenings at 2100 UTC. You will need to connect to the UltraNet network, a suitable server is 'irc.mirage.co.uk'.
Hopefully this homepage will provide information to airband monitors and others interested in the fascinating world of listening to the UHF (225-400 Mhz) airband. Also, this homepage will be a good starting point if you are looking for up-to-date information on air defense exercises, the frequencies being used and in the future you will find here a list of interesting air-to-air and ops frequencies. For the moment this site will be under construction, but if you have any questions or remarks already, please feel free to email them to Aerocom@xs4all.nl.
