Public Domain Software

A large part of the Yahoo! software and infrastructure has benefited immensely from the public domain software available on the net. We'd like to acknowledge some of the important components that we use at Yahoo!.
  • Perl - most of our custom code is written in Perl, an awesomely quick way to code. It does everything!

  • Mosaic - this is what got us started.

  • Tcl/Tk/Tcl-DP - Graphical utilities, communication scripts and socket based programs.

  • GNU Tool Suite - Emacs our editor of choice, gcc our compiler of choice, cool software.

  • FreeBSD - Some of our web servers run FreeBSD.

  • Linux - Some of our development machines run Linux.

Individual Efforts

Yahoo! users and their comments have made it into what it is today. The people who've contributed are too many to mention, but a few deserve special acknowledgement:
  • Ed Kubatis (ejk@uiuc.edu) wrote the original version of the Random Yahoo Link script.
  • Paul Hoffman has contributed valuable suggestions and feedback in reorganizing the Computers and Internet category.
  • Paul Burt has supplied a wealth of friendly, useful information to help organize radio stations.
  • Scott Banister has simplified the process of adding a URL to several internet catalogs including Yahoo!, by maintaining the free service Submit It!.
To everyone that has sent in additions, comments, compliments, (constructive) criticisms - you have our heartfelt thanks.
