Tsou-ke (Sooke) |
Two reserves on 67 hectares at the southern end of Vancouver Island. The reserves were allotted by the Joint Reserve Commission in 1877.
The band takes their name from the Sook tribe of Straits Salishans. The Sook were nearly annihilated in a combined attack of the Cowichans, Clallums and Nitinahts launched about 1848. The derivation of "Sooke" is unknown. It was early spelt "Soke" and pronounced "soak." The band had very early exposure to Europeans because of their association with the Hudson Bay Company. The band is part of the Salishan linguistic group.
