Uchucklesaht

Two reserves on 232 hectares on the southern end of Vancouver Island near Barkley Sound, about 30 km west of Victoria. The reserves were allotted by Commissioner O'Reilly in 1882.

At one point in the history of Vancouver Island, Barkley Sound was home to the highest population of Aboriginal peoples. There were five major tribes which dominated the Barkley Sound area and Uchucklesaht was one of five along with the Huu-ay-ayt, Toquaht, Sheshaht, and Ucluelet people. The name is derived from the Nootka word meaning "there inside the bay." The band is part of the Nootka linguistic group.
