Sechelt Indian Band
|
There are at least three versions to the meaning of Sechelt:
-
it was the ancient name that the Sechelt people had for themselves;
-
it is derived from a word meaning to "climb" or "climb over," possibly
referring to a fallen tree over which people had to climb in order to get
up from the beach; and
-
it is derived not from a Salishan word but rather from the English "sea
shelter."
The Sechelt Band was the first in Canada to be granted authority to manage
its own land under the provisions of the Indian Act. The band is part of
the Salishan linguistic group.
