 Linux/Unix

This is the Linux/Unix Page. If you feel it’s loading too slow in your browser, please use the Text-Only version.

Linux Piccy

This page is under construction. In fact, we haven’t really started on it yet. However, here are already some links I’ve found particularly good on the subject of Linux and Unix:

- The LinuxMall site. Good site with a good daily news link on Linux. It’s mainly suited for browsers on an 800 x 600 screen (which sucks, imho - it’s kinda elitist), but the contents are good.

- The LinuxResources page. Also a rather good site with up-to-date info on Linux.

- The NetBSD home page. My introduction to Unix (after Minix) on the Amiga, a few years back; a worthwile project which has created a Unix version for multiple platforms, including the Mac (68k, but PowerPC too), the Amiga, Sun3 workstations, Intel PC’s and other hardware.

- The OpenBSD home page. Similar to NetBSD, runs on some computers which NetBSD doesn’t (yet) run on, like Apple 68k Powerbooks.

- The MkLinux Home Page. This is the original PowerPC Linux for the Mac (and some other hardware, afaik). Partly started and once sponsored by Apple, it is the only Linux to run on Nubus PPC Macs (6100, 7100, 8100). Running on a Mach 3 kernel, it is a bit slower than LinuxPPC, but still good. I’ve run this for months (on and off) without one single fatal crash.

- The LinuxPPC Home Page. This is the other PowerPC MacLinux, and it is the most successful yet. This is the MacUnix to get if your Powermac doesn’t run OS X...

- The RedHat, SuSE and Caldera sites. The most popular vendors of Linux distributions so far.

- The Mess home page. Emulate just about any ol’ machine, including the IBM PC, NES, Gameboy, PDP-1 (Spacewar!)  and C64, on your Unix machine. Still in beta, but already an amazingly versatile program.
