Support for campus diversity does not
mean support for preferences, survey finds
Nearly 9 out of 10 Americans believe it is important to have
racial and ethnic diversity on college campuses, but far fewer
support the use of affirmative action to achieve it, according to
the results of a telephone survey released Sunday by the American
Council on Education.

Athletic Association is getting out of the debate over the
Confederate battle flag. The association on Friday rejected
requests that it move basketball-tournament games outside of
South Carolina and Georgia because of controversies over the
flag's role in those states.
3 police officers are awarded $4-million
in race-bias suit against Cal State U. at Fresno
A jury awarded three California State University police officers
a total of more than $4-million on Friday after finding that the
officers had suffered racial discrimination while employed at the
Fresno campus. The three men are white.

A sociologist at the American University in Cairo has been
released by Egyptian authorities after more than five weeks in
detention.
Colombian rebels free scientists and
students who were held as hostages
The National Liberation Army, a rebel force in Colombia, made
good on Saturday on its promise to release a 26-member biological
research team it had detained several days before. All 26 people
were reported to be in good condition.
