Nine-time All-Star Joe Sakic has agreed to a one-year contract worth $7.9 million in order to stay with Colorado. David Leeds/Allsport

Arbitration avoided

Sakic, Avalanche come to terms on one-year deal

The Colorado Avalanche couldn't sign Joe Sakic to a long-term deal, but they did manage to avoid salary arbitration by agreeing Monday on a one-year contract with their captain. Sakic, who led the Avalanche in scoring last season but struggled in the playoffs, will make $7.9 million this year. While Colorado GM Pierre Lacroix thinks Sakic wants to test the free-agent market next year, the nine-time All-Star says that's not necessarily so.
