They're in the swim: Two pool winners

Swimmer Katie McCann, 17, of Walpole, the three-time state champion in the 200-meter individual medley, is having a busy summer. She recently captured overall first place at the New England Senior meet, held last month at Brown University. Two weeks ago at Harvard, McCann qualified for the Olympic trials with a New England record-breaking time of 2:21.38 in the individual medley. McCann wasn't the only local swimmer faring well at the New England championships. Nick Pepe, 16, of Milton won the regional title in the 100-meter butterfly in his age group. Pepe, who swims for the Massachusetts Bay Marlins, will be a captain of the Boston College High School swim team in the upcoming season. His time in the championship race was a blistering 58.90 seconds. ... The Bridgewater State College athletic department sustained a huge loss this summer. Softball coach Dee Dee Enabenter of Plymouth has resigned to take a similar position in California. In 17 years, she has surpassed 400 wins and has won more than 70 percent of her games. ... A round of applause to Paul ''King'' Seddon, who won his 14th club championship at Norfolk Golf Club in Westwood. Seddon won last in 1996. Seddon fashioned rounds of 75, 72, and 78 for a 225 score, four better than runners-up David Scales, Rob Anderson, and Jack Flynn. ... It will be a busy time at the Hingham Yacht Club for the next couple of days. The club is hosting the 2000 Mass. Bay Sailing Youth Regatta USA Junior Olympics Sailing Festival. The regatta is open to all sailors born on or after Jan. 1, 1982. The fleets include Optimist, limit 100, N-10s, limit 40, Lasers, limit 25 and Club 420s, limit 60. ... MassHysteria, which finished runner-up in both the state and New England AAU basketball championship tournaments, competed last month at the National AAU 17 and Under Championships at the Disney Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla. The team, coached by Dave Aldrich, former head coach at Hopkinton and Canton high schools, posted a 2-3 record, including victories over Ohio and Arkansas. Aldrich, a Hopkinton resident, is completing his sixth and final season with the current edition of MassHysteria, which he started as a 12 and Under team. Team members included South Boston's John Hurley of Thayer Academy in Braintree, a 6-7 forward and member of the team's starting unit. ''Our primary goal,'' said Aldrich, ''is to help these kids develop into the best players they can be and to help them play at a higher level.''

Taking the field for fair Harvard

Football season is just a couple of weeks away for local colleges and high schools. When Harvard University begins preseason practice on Aug. 25, three South Weekly players will be vying for starting assignments. They are junior Jared Lewis of Plymouth and freshmen Justin Golden of Cohasset and Marc Wayshak of Sharon. Lewis is a junior tailback who played at Archbishop Williams before matriculating at Harvard. He starts the summer workouts as second on the depth chart, and is likely to return kickoffs. He was the team's top performer at spring strength and conditioning events. He holds Williams' career rushing record with 4,500 yards. He also scored a school-record 181 points during his senior year, second-most in state history. Golden is a sophomore defensive back. He is a walk-on and has moved up to fourth on the Harvard depth chart at strong safety. Wayshak is a freshman linebacker who earned all-Hockomock League honors at Sharon High School. He set a school record in sacks and was multitalented. He captained the track team and was an all-league performer there, as well. ... Greg Crum of Norton, who graduated from Worcester State College this spring, has been hired as an assistant football coach at Assumption College. Crum, who saw action in the Eastern Football League with the defunct Hockomock Colts and the Marlborough Shamrocks, will coach the defensive line. One of the top players on the defensive line is sophomore Stan Benjamin of Randolph, a 5-foot-9, 215-pound defensive end. In limited action last year, the former Boston College High star had 30 tackles. Among the new recruits at Assumption is Tom Akilian of Easton. The former Oliver Ames High School star is a 6-foot-4-inch, 240-pound tight end. Also making his debut is fellow Oliver Ames lineman Rob Keach, 6-2, 255 pounds. ... Congratulations to the members of the South 6 on 6 field hockey team that won the Bay State Games championship. The team consists of Allie Early of Milton, Caroline Gooding of Braintree, Leah Snyder and Jenn Harrison of Hanover, Davon King and Lindsay Shulman of Hingham, Lauren Smith of Cohasset, and Heather Richter of Plymouth. All of these gold medal winners are students at Thayer Academy in Braintree.
