E-Intifada: political disputes cast shadows in cyberspace
Asymmetric warfare has long been a favourite tool of terrorist organisations worldwide. The recent suicide attack on the USS Cole is a painful reminder of the ability of a small terrorist organisation to wage war against the most powerful of nations. However, this type of attack is not new. Now, new trends of attack are visible in cyberspace.

Russia's strategic forces stumble
RUSSIA'S STRATEGIC nuclear forces have entered the millennium with a broad range of financial, technological, diplomatic and organisational problems. By the middle of this year future prospects were further clouded by the politicisation of the reform debate, linked to the succession struggle for the post of minister of defence. It seems unlikely that the Kremlin will be able to stabilise the operational capabilities of the force. The question is whether the force will continue to erode in a controlled or haphazard way.

Kostunica: is he really good news?

Alex Standish, Editor of Jane's Intelligence Digest, answers questions about the recent overthrow of Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic and his successor, Vojislav Kostunica. Key questions: Who is Kostunica? Is he really in control of Yugoslavia? Can the West do business with him? How will these events affect Kosovo and Montenegro?

After Milosevic . . . what?
While Western leaders have welcomed the apparent overthrow of Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic, his fall is likely to present a number of serious problems, not least for peacekeepers in Kosovo. There is also the risk that, with his room for manoeuvre virtually eliminated, Milosevic -- who continues to have a significant number of hardcore supporters -- may decide to mount a last stand at his heavily defended bunker complex at Bor in eastern Serbia.

Shaping Palestinian security
The fact that a Palestinian state will come into being sooner or later, with or without Israel's formal consent, is now widely accepted. Yet, while the Palestinian leadership has over the years clearly outlined its national aims, the fledgling state's security concerns remain obscure.

Attack on US Ships Shows Vulnerabilities
The apparent terrorist attack on the USS Cole in the port of Aden, Yemen, highlights the new threats facing the US and other advanced military forces in an era when their size, reach and warfighting capability increasingly lead adversaries to seek non-traditional and often low-tech means of inflicting damage.
